George Owens Nature Park
There area where George Owens Nature Park in Independence MO situates is the part of
Jackson County, MO, that was settled in the 1820s. The property which later became George Owens Nature Park, was
acquired from the government by Thomas Slayton, a prominent pioneer in Jackson County, MO. The majority of the park
at one time was cleared and used for farming.
During the past 100 years, various fields were abandoned, which allowed the natural process of
ecological succession to occur. Today, most of the park is covered with trees, resembling the foliage covered land
